Must-Have Winter Products

They are some great aspects of winter: everything blanketed in snow, hot chocolate, ice skating, reading by the fire, snow ball fights, snow men. You get the gist. But there are also some bad aspects when it comes to beauty. I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about. Dry skin, dry hair, dry lips, dry everything. So to prevent these winter side effects we must crank our beauty regimen up.  To do this here are some great beauty products and tips to keep your body in great shape even in the winter cold and wind.

The key to keeping your face from becoming dry and flaky is LOTS of moisturizer. Be sure to moisturize every morning and night. Make sure to remove make-up as soon as you get home. Wearing make-up too long will only dry out your face more.

  1. AVEENO Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer $14.99– My personal facial moisturizer. Soothes/calms dry and irritated skin while reducing redness.

Winter weather also takes moisture out of your body. So slab moisturizer on your skin directly after your shower and take warm (not hot) showers. Hot water only dries out your skin more. For your hands and feet, put moisturizer on them and cover them with socks every night before bed to lock in moisture.

  1. AVEENO Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion $12.00– Helps with five symptoms of winter skin (dryness, discomfort, flaking, roughness, itchiness)
  2. Jergens Shea Butter Skin Enriching Cream $3.99– Transforms skin into radiantly soft skin as well as making your skin smell great.

From winter wind to hair dryers to straightners, your hair is bound to suffer. To help heal your hair your key is CONDITIONER. Use it daily as well as rinsing your hair with cold water. Hot water dries out your hair and cold water will add shine to it.  A moisturizing hair masque is another great way to add moisture to your hair. I recommend limiting your use of heated hair-styling products because they will only dry out your hair more.

  1. Pantene Medium to Thick Dry to Moisturized Conditioner $4.99– I love this moisturizer it makes my hair silky smooth.
  2. Frizz-Ease Reinforce Strengthening Triple Crème Masque $14.99 This moisturizing masque is great for fixing split ends, dryness and breakage.
  3. Bumble and Bumble De-Frizz $25.00– Frizz is another winter hair problem but this product eliminated all frizz.

My least favorite winter side effect is dry lips. This is my personnel hell. I hate chapped lips, cracked lips or just plain and simple dry lips. But these can all be prevented, its plain and simple- lip balm, chapstick, and lip moisturizer. The best thing you can do is apply it at night so your lips absorb the most moisture before being exposed.

  1. Original Carmex Tube $3.00– I love Carmex. It is perfect for preventing and heeling dry lips. It makes my lips kissable.
  2. Smashbox Emulsion Lip Exfoliant $18.00– A lip exfoliant is a must have for dry, flaking lips. This exfoliant not only exfoliates but also conditions. Plus it smells yummy.

Winter-ize Your Spring Dress

Winter weather always gets me in a funk. It’s cold and dreary, making it unappealing to leave my bedroom. I haven’t even been back to school for a week yet and I’ve already thrown style out the window. The problem, besides struggling to leave my warm bed in the morning, is I feel uninspired fashion-wise in the winter. I feel like all of my warm clothes are just boring and dull.  After days of jeans and sweatshirts, I needed to shake up my winter wardrobe.  It was time to mix things up by throwing in some skirts and dresses. I absolutely love dresses especially my floral spring dresses. But the problem is you can’t wear a strapless floral dress in the middle of winter. Or can you?

The key to mastering fashion is never afraid to be daring. So why not mix up your dull winter wardrobe by throwing in a floral dress. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to tuck away your strapless dresses. The key is mixing in winter pieces to add warm and winterize your originally springtime dress. So here are the tips:

Throw a cropped sweater over your strapless floral dress. Pull the sweater in with a woven belt and cover up your legs with thick tights. Finish it off with a pair of winter boots and add some personality with a necklace (possible a sparkly statement necklace). This outfit makes a strapless dress into a warm and comfortable winter approved ensemble.

Wear your dress over a long-sleeve shirt or turtleneck. Pair it with a cozy scarf, tights and boots (like these buckled riding boots) for a cute and casual winter look that adds a pop of color.

Pair your floral dress with a chunky cardigan or knit sweater. For a more polished look pair your dress with a tailored blazer. Add tights and cute booties to warm up the look and winterize it. You can add some personality with scarves or a fun pair of decorated tights like these brassy tights.

The key to pulling off this look is mixing more neutral colored and winter pieces with your bright spring dress. That way your adding color to your ensemble while looking winter appropriate.

Chic Winter Layers

First day back at school is always miserable. For starters I’m still in vacation mode as well as missing my boyfriend, friends and family (especially my little brothers) I left back in Georgia. Then you have the stress and jitters of the first day back at school. Even though I’m 19 (almost 20) years old I still feel like I’m five years old every time I start a new school year or new quarter. You know that feeling of awkwardness, nervousness and fear all bumping around in your stomach. And on top of everything I’ve gone from Georgia weather to freezing Ohio weather. The biggest challenge to me about going to school in Ohio is getting dressed. Even though it’s my second year here at Ohio University, I still haven’t adjusted to the cold weather nor have I fully grasped how to dress for the freezing temperatures. The problem I face: I either dress too light or too warm. Or when I dress just right I end up getting a two-hour class in a room with no air conditioning, no windows you can open and the heat blaring… let’s just say I know how I Thanksgiving turkey now feels. But I feel I’ve been getting much better at finding ways to be fashionable and warm. Here’s the secret: Layers.

I know, I know layering isn’t much of a secret but it can be a difficult to master so you look chic without looking bulky. So I will give you a few simple tips to make you a fashionable layering master.

  1. Start with a light, basic layer such as a short sleeve tee or a thinner long sleeve tee.
  2. Top with a cardigan or a chunky open-knit sweater.  **Tip- If your second layer is more bulky or less flowy then add a thin belt around the waist to pull the look together and show off some curves.
  3. Wrap a scarf around your neck. If you opted for a chunky knit then pair a lighter scarf with an ensemble (not a knitted one).
  4. This is where you add your winter jacket. Choose one that is warm but since you already have layers on underneath it, don’t wear a thick or puffier jacket. Adding a really thick/ puffy jacket will make you look more like Randy in A Christmas story than winter chic.

These tips will help you keep warm out in the winter weather while allowing you to take off layers to adjust to other settings you might be in (like an 100 degree Women’s Gender Studies Class).

For class you can still be warm and comfortable while being stylish

You can layer with a skirt by adding tights, boots and a cardigan to a simple skirt and tee.

Layers are perfect for looking chic while staying warm for a night out. Tip: Wear knee high socks over patterned tights for a unique layered look

The Perfect Winter Piece!

Open Knit Sweater- H&M, Skinny jeans- Forever21, White tank- Nordstrom

On my most recent shopping endeavor I found a black chunky knit open sweater from H&M that I have fallen head over heels in love with.  It was only $15 and the knit plus the style makes it an irresistible piece for the winter. It’s so warm and comfy I can’t take it off. Georgia has been extremely cold this winter and Sunday we got snow flurries (which is a big deal in Georgia). It didn’t stick but with the cold, the wind and the snow flurries I was thankful to have my new sweater to wrap up in with hot coco and a good book. There is nothing better than a chunky knit on a cold winter day. Chunky knits are great for warmth and super stylish for the winter season. Which makes chunky knits the perfect winter piece!

Chunky knits are bold, which is a big part of their appeal. So when planning an ensemble around a chunky knit keep it simple. When wearing a chunky knit you want to go for a more relaxed style. So I recommend pairing it with a pair of skinny jeans or leggings. If you want to dress up your chunky sweater then pair it with a sleek neutral colored skirt, and opaque tights or opt for a chunky knit sweater dress. Boots are the perfect footwear to wear with chunky knits but keep your boots simple. Since your sweater will be so bulky keep the boots tall and smooth to balance out the ensemble. When it comes to accessorizing a chunky knit here are a few tips:

  1. Skip the necklace! Since the bulk of your ensemble will be on top (the chunky knit) it’s best to skip accessorizing with necklaces or scarves. These will only add more bulk to your neck/face making your outfit appear top heavy.
  2. Bracelets are the perfect accessories for chunky knits as they help balance out your look. But keep the bracelet simple and basic like a gold cuff.
  3. How to wear your hair? Sleek! Too much curl in your hair will just add more bulk to the top of your body. So keep your hair sleek and straight or pull it up in a sleek ponytail. Or for a unique hairstyle try my new favorite look: a fishtail braid (a tutorial on how to fishtail braid to come).

Sparkles! Studded! and Sequined New Years!

New Years Eve is probably one of the biggest party’s of the year. You’re celebrating the end of a year and the start of another. So when it comes to what to wear it’s essential to not hold back. Think bold! This is not only what you will be wearing at the end of 2010 but also what you will be wearing to welcome 2011. It’s important that every fashionista start off 2011 in style, so when planning your New Years Eve outfit think sparkles, studded and sequined.

Don’t be afraid to shine New Years Eve or better yet to sparkle. Glitter, and jewels is perfect for sparkling this holiday. Why not hit your New Years Eve party in shimmery glittery dress or a short jeweled cocktail dress. If you’ll be saying goodbye to 2010 in a less formal setting why not opt for a glittery with your favorite skinny jeans or a simple black top and skinny jeans paired with [to die for] glitter heels (yes like Dorothy rocked in the Wizard of Oz).

Nothing says bold, sexy and edgy like studs. So if you want to be remembered at the end of 2010 as the bold, edgy fashionista that you are then hit your party rocking a black studded cutout dress or a studded bustier. These hott choices will definitely be remembered through 2011. Or if your soirée is a little more casual then pair a simple top and skinny jeans with some studded accessories like a studded clutch or killer studded heels. These simple yet edgy accessories will make for the perfect casual New Years ensemble.

Last, but not least we finish off our New Years Eve options with sequin. Nothing says New Years Eve more then a sequin dress.  Sequin is fun, bold, sexy and just screams party. So be the belle of your New Years Eve party in an over the top sequin dresses whether you choose a long-sleeve, short sleeve or strapless dress. But if the dress code for your party doesn’t call for a cocktail dress have no fear! You can still rock sequins on December 31st. Switch the dress for a sequined top with a great pair of dark skinnys. Or for a unique look pair a sequined blazer over a white top with skinny jeans. Whatever your outfit choice may be you can’t go wrong with sequin.

New Years Eve is all about celebrating the times you had in 2010 and welcoming the times to come in 2011. It’s about starting over, starting fresh. So have a sparkle, studded, sequined New Year!

… The Icing on the Cake!

Winter accessories are like the icing on the cake of your winter ensemble. Not only do they pull the look together but also are key to adding a bit of personality (and warmth!) to your look.  From studs to jewels to fur, winter accessories have been trimmed with these details to give your scarves, hats and gloves a bold look. If you’re looking for an edgy look then studded leather gloves are perfect for you. If you’re a looking for a more sweet and classy look then opt for a pair of suede gloves with a cloche (a classy change from the typical knitted winter hats). If you want elegance out of your winter accessories then opt for a fur scarf. Whatever your style may be, stores are full of unique winter accessories to complete your winter wardrobe this season. Cover Up with these Winter Coats!

It’s December and in Georgia we are starting to see the temperatures dropping. No longer can we get away with a light jacket, it’s time we break out the heavy artillery: winter coats. This season there are so many stylish options to keep you warm and looking fashionable during the cold weather

The Aviator Jacket: This is one coat trend that I’m completely in love with. This timeless classic has been given a whole new modern twist this season. This is one piece that I strongly recommend you invest in for the winter season. If you want for a more unique look then take a tip from Burberry by pairing it with wispy, delicate dresses.

The Cape: This winter jacket has become very popular this season. It creates a chic, polished look. Capes come in all styles, colors and cuts. The key is to find the perfect one for you. You can go for a more edgy stile like this one from General Assembly or you can stay classic with this cape from Top Shop. This winter coat is very versatile and the perfect addition to anyone’s winter wardrobe.

The Military Coat: The military trend has been very popular this season from being used on pants, skirts, shirts and jackets, so of course it’s going to be a must-have trend in winter coats. It’s a great coat to make a statement. One of the things I love most about military coats is the military details and the oversized buttons. This little details really create a one-of-a-kind fashion piece.

The Camel Coat: Neutral tones are very big this season and a camel coat is theperfect winter coat to embrace the neutral tone trend. This coat creates a chic, classic look. Colors range from buff to cognac to my favorite taupe. The key is to find a color the highlights your skin tone and then hit the town in a classy look.

Get Three Looks From One Party Dress

Thanksgiving has ended but the holiday season is not over.  As December begins so does the season of holiday parties. For any fashionista holiday parties are an important time to showcase your great sense of style. But here is the problem I’m sure a lot of you face. You get invited to three totally different holiday parties that require three different ensembles. If you’re a college student like me then you don’t have an extensive budget. So buying three party dresses isn’t something you can afford. Instead here are some tips on how to take one party dress and create three different looks. It’s affordable, stylish and your friends will hardly know it’s the same dress.

The Dress: When it comes to picking the one perfect party dress pick a solid color, basic cut dress. This way you have a wider selection of jackets, shoes and accessories to pair with it. A strapless dress is also easier to transform as the cut makes it easier to mix and match with a variety of accessories. I chose a basic red strapless dress from H&M.

The Edgy Holiday Look: For an edgy look for a holiday party add a jeweled blazer like this one from H&M. This jacket is edgy and stylish. But since the jacket is so bold keep the other accessories basic. Pair it with black booties, a basic black clutch and a simple jeweled bracelet. For the lips go bold with a red lip.

Meet the Parents Holiday Party: When it comes to meeting your new boyfriends parents you want a stylish look that shows your personality without showing too much skin. Cover your shoulders with a basic black cardigan. This black cardigan from Alloy adds a bit of spice with its lace back. Cover your legs with a pair of opaque black tights and add some bold style by pairing it with a pair of studded black flats. Finish it off with a simple black, chained clutch like this rosette one.

Elegant Dinner Holiday Party: For an elegant dinner party, you can’t get more elegant than a faux fur jacket. So pair your party dress with a faux fur jacket or a faux fur cropped jacket. With something as bold as a fur jacket you need to keep your shoes basic like these basic black pumps. Keep your legs bare for a sexy look. Pair it with a jeweled clutch and polish the look off with a chic up-do like this one from my favorite blog Cupcakes and Cashmere.
