Look Original on Valentine’s Day

Break out the doily hearts, the glitter, the red and white construction paper, and the heart-shaped lollipops because Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Whether you have a valentine or not, there is no reason for you to not enjoy your Valentine’s Day in style.

Just like any other big event, Valentines Day is just another excuse to break out our best dresses, and heels. When it comes to dressing for V-day red dresses and black dresses are predictable and boring. Have fun this holiday, and break out unexpected colors: corals, creams, navys. Yes red is the essence of this romantic day but when it comes to fashion the key is to being original. You can add, “love” to your outfits with heart shaped jewelry, or red nail polish.

Spending the holiday with your boyfriend or crush? Then here are some fun outfit ideas to have you look your best this Valentines Day.

Sparkles! Studded! and Sequined New Years!

New Years Eve is probably one of the biggest party’s of the year. You’re celebrating the end of a year and the start of another. So when it comes to what to wear it’s essential to not hold back. Think bold! This is not only what you will be wearing at the end of 2010 but also what you will be wearing to welcome 2011. It’s important that every fashionista start off 2011 in style, so when planning your New Years Eve outfit think sparkles, studded and sequined.

Don’t be afraid to shine New Years Eve or better yet to sparkle. Glitter, and jewels is perfect for sparkling this holiday. Why not hit your New Years Eve party in shimmery glittery dress or a short jeweled cocktail dress. If you’ll be saying goodbye to 2010 in a less formal setting why not opt for a glittery with your favorite skinny jeans or a simple black top and skinny jeans paired with [to die for] glitter heels (yes like Dorothy rocked in the Wizard of Oz).

Nothing says bold, sexy and edgy like studs. So if you want to be remembered at the end of 2010 as the bold, edgy fashionista that you are then hit your party rocking a black studded cutout dress or a studded bustier. These hott choices will definitely be remembered through 2011. Or if your soirée is a little more casual then pair a simple top and skinny jeans with some studded accessories like a studded clutch or killer studded heels. These simple yet edgy accessories will make for the perfect casual New Years ensemble.

Last, but not least we finish off our New Years Eve options with sequin. Nothing says New Years Eve more then a sequin dress.  Sequin is fun, bold, sexy and just screams party. So be the belle of your New Years Eve party in an over the top sequin dresses whether you choose a long-sleeve, short sleeve or strapless dress. But if the dress code for your party doesn’t call for a cocktail dress have no fear! You can still rock sequins on December 31st. Switch the dress for a sequined top with a great pair of dark skinnys. Or for a unique look pair a sequined blazer over a white top with skinny jeans. Whatever your outfit choice may be you can’t go wrong with sequin.

New Years Eve is all about celebrating the times you had in 2010 and welcoming the times to come in 2011. It’s about starting over, starting fresh. So have a sparkle, studded, sequined New Year!

Tips to Surviving the Holiday Crowds

I hit the mall today for a little (well deserved) retail therapy only to come out as stressed as when I went in. Don’t get me wrong I love malls. I love the store windows lined with unique displays, the hustle-and-bustle of people. I especially love it during the holidays when the mall is filled with Christmas lights, wreaths, trees and decorations. But I do not like the mall when the stores are packed to the brim with people, making it impossible to move around let alone find what you need. The number of people makes the stores a million degrees hotter and the loud chattering of people makes it impossible to think or relax. So by the end of your shopping adventure all you are is frustrated and hot. So I’ve decided to help my fellow fashionistas conquer the over-crowded holiday malls by arming them with helpful tips to get you in and out without feeling stressed or frustrated.

  1. Schedule your shopping endeavors to avoid “peak” times. “Peak” times being the malls most crowded days/hours. Avoid weekends. Stick to weekdays as most people are working or still in school. If you must go on weekends go early in the morning. Avoid the evenings on weekends, as they will be the most crowded.
  2. Make a list. Make it as specific as you can. That way you will know exactly what you need and exactly where to go to get it. Thus avoiding time trapped in crowded stores wandering around looking for stuff.
  3. Dress in comfortable, light layers. Yes it’s cold outside but once you get into a crowded mall that winter jacket will become your worst enemy. So dress in light layers that can be removed when the mall gets hotter.
  4. Leave the heels at home. Yes those six-inch heels do make your legs look great but after 30 min on your feet in a crowded mall your feet will hate you. Instead opt for more comfortable flats. Trust me being uncomfortable will only make your shopping experience more painful.
  5. Shop alone. Shopping with a friend is great for leisure but when shopping for a purpose (like Christmas shopping) this friend will only drag you down. With the holiday crowds its better for you if you only have to monitor yourself.

I hope you will find these tips helpful when maneuvering through the crowded holiday stores. Good luck holiday shopping fashionistas!

Get Three Looks From One Party Dress

Thanksgiving has ended but the holiday season is not over.  As December begins so does the season of holiday parties. For any fashionista holiday parties are an important time to showcase your great sense of style. But here is the problem I’m sure a lot of you face. You get invited to three totally different holiday parties that require three different ensembles. If you’re a college student like me then you don’t have an extensive budget. So buying three party dresses isn’t something you can afford. Instead here are some tips on how to take one party dress and create three different looks. It’s affordable, stylish and your friends will hardly know it’s the same dress.

The Dress: When it comes to picking the one perfect party dress pick a solid color, basic cut dress. This way you have a wider selection of jackets, shoes and accessories to pair with it. A strapless dress is also easier to transform as the cut makes it easier to mix and match with a variety of accessories. I chose a basic red strapless dress from H&M.

The Edgy Holiday Look: For an edgy look for a holiday party add a jeweled blazer like this one from H&M. This jacket is edgy and stylish. But since the jacket is so bold keep the other accessories basic. Pair it with black booties, a basic black clutch and a simple jeweled bracelet. For the lips go bold with a red lip.

Meet the Parents Holiday Party: When it comes to meeting your new boyfriends parents you want a stylish look that shows your personality without showing too much skin. Cover your shoulders with a basic black cardigan. This black cardigan from Alloy adds a bit of spice with its lace back. Cover your legs with a pair of opaque black tights and add some bold style by pairing it with a pair of studded black flats. Finish it off with a simple black, chained clutch like this rosette one.

Elegant Dinner Holiday Party: For an elegant dinner party, you can’t get more elegant than a faux fur jacket. So pair your party dress with a faux fur jacket or a faux fur cropped jacket. With something as bold as a fur jacket you need to keep your shoes basic like these basic black pumps. Keep your legs bare for a sexy look. Pair it with a jeweled clutch and polish the look off with a chic up-do like this one from my favorite blog Cupcakes and Cashmere.

Quick Halloween Costume

With Halloween less then a week away, Time is running out to come up with a great Halloween costume. Here is a great costume idea that is easy to put together, most of it you can find in your own closet!

I came across this idea while working on the fall footwear story. We’ve all see those funny Orbit gum commercial, so why not go as the Orbit girl. All you need is a white dress, a pink neck scarf, teal headband, teal/blue belt and orbit gum. You can even add a white blazer for warmth. Don’t forget to smile a lot.

Halloween With Style

Vogue Paris got in the Halloween spirit for their October 2010 issue by doing a Masquerade themed photo shoot. With the creepy costumes and untamed hairdos, these models are ready to hit the streets for an unforgettable Halloween look. So how can you channel Vogue Paris this Halloween? For one skip over those packaged “sexy” costumes and opt for a more unique costume. Buy a bob wig and channel your inner Anna Wintour. Or throw on a long fur coat, long blonde wig and hit the streets as Rachel Zoe. Take your Halloween idea and give it a fashion twist.

A peacock is a popular and cute Halloween costume. But a lot of the pre-made peacock costumes you find at costume stores look cheap and ridiculous. Instead show your style and bring fashion to your Halloween costume. The key to the peacock costume is the peacock feather. So incorporate them as much as you can. You can buy a dress with a peacock feather pattern on it or if your more daring stick with a simple black dress and sew (or glue) on peacock feathers on your bottom. Next is your hair. Peacock feathers are fairly popular in accessories so it shouldn’t be hard to find peacock headbands or hair clips. Or be more creative and make them yourself. Finish it with some feathered earrings, tights and cute heels. You will be the most fashionable peacock on Halloween.

The black cat is a popular symbol for Halloween. You could always opt for that “sexy” cat costume from Victoria Secret but I say do it with style. Start with a pair of black leather leggings (Forver21 $10.80) or a pair of black sequins leggings and your favorite black pumps. Next a black long sleeve shirt (I’m sure you already have one in your closet) and a black faux fur vest. Buy a headband with cat-ears or whip out your hot glue gun and make one yourself. Fur is popular this season so it should be easy to find fur accessories to spice up your costume.  Finish it off with some dramatic cat-eye makeup, black nail polish and red lips. You will have all other girls purring with envy over your fashionable and unique costume.

A witch is a very popular Halloween costume. Most people opt for those sexy pre-packaged witch costumes but this year why not be a sexy witch with style! Take out that sexy black dress out of your closet as the base for your witch costume. Pair it with a pair of lace tights or even better spider web tights. Then add a cute pair of black boots or black pointed toe heels. Add a little edge to your costume by throwing on a leather jacket. Accessorize with some spiked jewelry or spider earrings. Don’t forget a witch hat, it’s what makes the costume. Cute choices are mini witch hats, you can find a lot like the ones pictured at Halloween stores. Complete the ensemble with some sexy smokey eye make-up and a witch themed manicure. Your witch costume will be a great stylish and edgy.

This Halloween my friends and I have opted for a fun group idea. We will be hitting the streets this year dressed as your favorite cereal box characters. This fashionista will be going as Toucan Sam with style. Instead of buying a Toucan Sam costume I’ve decided to make my own costume and give it a fashion twist. First I bought a simple sleeveless dress from Forever 21 (only $12.50). The top of the dress is white so I am dying it blue to look more like Toucan Sam. The bottom of the dress (which is black) I will be covering with blue feathers of a variety of shades. Inspired by the Masquerade shoot I will be wearing a feathery purple/yellow/green/blue mask. For my hair I am going for a wavy, messy look with feathers clipped in. To keep myself warm I will be wearing yellow tights (just like Toucan Sam’s legs) and yellow flats. Unfortunately I don’t have the costume finished or else I would show you pictures to help you understand. Hopefully you get the idea.

So hopefully these costume examples will give you great motivation to do this Halloween with style. Skip the boring pre-packaged option and make your own unique costume couture.
